Financial Support

SURFers receive Research Fellowships funded jointly by NIST, NSF, and their school. Students receive a $4,000 stipend for the 12 weeks ($3,000 for 9 weeks), in addition to travel and housing allowances.

Students are expected to pay for food out of their $4,000 stipend. To help control the food expenses, the student apartments have a full kitchen with dishes, utensils, pots and pans.

This is a competitive program that reviews both the university and student portion of the application to determine the final list of SURF awardees. In the past, the NIST SURF program has been able to support approximately 100 students.
